Chernivtsi Regional Philharmonic Society

In 1876-1877 the music-lovers of Chernivtsi collected money to construct a concert hall of the Ukrainian musician society, which promoted Ukrainian songs and music and organized concerts of famous singers who visited Chernivtsi: E. Caruso, P. Morgans, S. Krushelnytska, O. Rusnak, J. Tubaugh, M. Lysenko, F. Shaliapin, B. Sauer, P. Robson.

The Regional Philharmonic Society was organized on July 8, 1940. It also included both the folk choir and Concert Company. The Chernivites have had a wonderful possibility to visit wonderful performances of Pavlo Virsky Dance Company, "Dumka" ("The Thought") Academic Choir, Yevshan Dance Company and Taras Shevchenko Dance and Song Company (Canada), Bandure Choir (USA) and others for the last decade.

Chernivtsi Regional Philharmonic Society is known for the world famous singers Orest Rusnak, People’s Artists of Ukraine Sophia Rotaru, Nazariy Yaremchuk, Vasyl Zinkevych, Pavlo Dvorskyy, Lilia Sandulesa, Ivo Bobul, Anatoliy Yevdokymenko, Honoured Artists of Ukraine Sidi Tal, Semen Shkurhan, Shevchenko National Prize winner, pop groups “Chervona Ruta”, “Smerichka”, “Cheremosh”, “Zhyva Voda”.

The opening ceremony of the Hall of Organ and Chamber Music dedicated to the 1st anniversary of the independence of Ukraine took place on August 18, 1992.

Since that time the admirers of chamber and organ music have had a lot of possibilities to listen to the famous musicians.

The Honoured Bukovynian Folk Dance and Song Company is also a member of the philharmonic society. Since 1962 it has been guided by the People’s artist of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko National Prize winner Andriy Kushnirenko.

The Orchestra of Chamber Music was founded in 1975 and since that time it has been the winner of different national contests. The art director of the Orchestra is the People’s artist of Ukraine, professor Yuriy Hina.

“Music Education” concert group was founded in 1953. Its main activity is educative working music sphere among children and young people, farmers and office workers.

The City Council sponsored the foundation of the symphony orchestra in 1992. Its repertoire includes more than 100 performances and visits to Italy, Romania, Yugoslavia, and all regions of Ukraine. Since 2000 the art director and conductor is Josyp Sozanskyy.

The philharmonic society of Chernivtsi also includes the chamber choir, the violin duet and other music groups. Their repertoire includes spiritual and secular music by composers D.Bortnyanskyy, M.Berezovskyy, M.Leontovych, H.Davydovskyy, I.Zolotoustyy etc.
