Klagenfurt

The City of Klagenfurt is the capital of Kaernten region (Austria) and lies in the picturesque place of the Alps near the western bay of Wartsee Lake which is 19 km long. The first written record about this place is dated to the 12th century and, as a town it is known from 1279.

The city government also pays much attention to the industrial development. World famous companies such as SIEMENS, PHILIPS, ADIDAS have opened their offices in Klagenfurt. PAGO plant produces juice here and one of the oldest Austrian breweries SCHLEPPE also has its production in the city.

Owing to its location the city has highly developed tourism industry.

Klagenfurt is one of the most important cultural, educational and trade centers in Kaernten. The city is the home of the University of Klagenfurt and Pedagogical Academy, drama theatre and other cultural establishments. Among them famous "EUROPE Park" (occupies about 22 hectares) with Minimundus (Little World) on Wartsee Lake where one can find copies of many well-known buildings, bridges, towers and other constructions from all over the world. About 500,000 tourists visit Minimundus every year.

The population of Klagenfurt is about 100,000 inhabitants.

The Sister-City Agreement between Chernivtsi and Klagenfurt was signed on June 5, 1992.

After signing of the agreement tight contacts were established between our cities. Many young people from Chernivtsi participate in Klagenfurt International Youth Festivals every year.

The museum of the writer George Drozdovski was recently opened in Chernivtsi in cooperation with the Kaernten regional government. George Drozdovski lived in our city and then moved to Kaernten.

The regional government of Kaernten is also a partner in joint TACIS projects held in Chernivtsi and Austria.
